Science Park Gelsenkirchen
North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), is home to one of Germany’s most active renewable energy hubs. Once known for its vast coal and steel industry, the region has turned into a center for research, networking and trade in photovoltaics, wind energy and many other environmental technologies. The driver within the Science Park is the Project Group on Future Energies (“Zukunftsenergien”) – a theme which is the first in a list of five industry clusters including health, IT, Science and the Arts. We spoke with Wolfgang Jung, who heads the energy project.
One of the most interesting outbound activities of the group are international matchmaking events between NRW renewable energy businesses and foreign investors. Jung’s group has hosted such an event with a delegation of photovoltaics entrepreneurs from South Korea at the recent international trade fair e-world energy & water in Essen. He told us that the cooperation with NRW and the partner, Korea Management Corporation (KEMCO), went back several years. The recent visit came about due to the unprecedented growth in the PV market which Korea experienced last year and which was prompted by an increase in funding tools and cluster development. According to Jung, more than 350 Megawatt of solar power were installed in South Korea, mostly in the form of large-scale projects.
