The first solar settlement of the Ruhr area was built as a result of a request of the "Landesinitiative für Zukunftenergien NRW" for "50 solar settlements in NRW, made in 1997. The ideal area for this programm was a municipally owned building site, which was developed as part of the project "Stadtteilprogramm Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck, Schalke-Nord" and already supported by the IBA Emscher Park.
In the summer of 1998, all conditions for the status "solar settlement in planning" were met. Both investors (Bau + Grund, Gelsenkirchen; Interboden, Ratingen) were ready to respectively construct 36 single family homes, for which two different energy concepts were chosen. Sun energy generates more than 60% of the hot water supply, more than 50%, respectively 33% of power supply. The low-energy-houses fall below the regulations of the heat insulation ordinance 1995 by 25% (heat demand on average 37kWh/m²a).
The building services are also designed to save energy: Washing machines and dishwashers are attached to the water heating (= 35% power savings), all houses obtain gas ports for cooking (40% less power requirements than common electric kitchen stoves). Calculated CO² emissions of the houses are about 2,9t. Compared to conventionell new buildings of the same size, this means savings of 55%, compared to low-energy-houses there is still a reduction of 30%. A scientific research of the "TÜV Rheinland" surveyed the actual temperatures and consumption figures for two years.
B+G houses each obtained 5m² rooftop solar collectors and photovoltaic units of 1,5 kWp capacity, all houses are supplied seperately. Interboden houses obtained 5m² solar collectors over the south windows, to produce shades. Photovoltaic units of 1 kWp were also mounted on top of the windows, but also build onto green roofs. Groups of 5-10 houses have a combined energy supply via head ends to reduce costs.
Additional heat energy, which is predominantly needed in winter, is generated by natural gas in condensing boilers. Contractor, installer and owner of the power generating plant is ELE (Emscher Lippe Energie GmbH). ELE settles energy services directly with the clients.
