Vegetable Oil - CHP in the Revierpark Nienhausen

Heat led combined heat and power unit producing 350 kW heat capacity on rape oil basis, 2007

The ELE Emscher Lippe Energie GmbH installed a vegetable oil operated combined heat and power unit in the Revierpark in 2007.

Background: The Revierpark Nienhausen offers different recreational ativities to citizens of Essen and Gelsenkirchen. Some of these offers, for example the spa "activarium" and the lido,  are very energy-intensive. Therefore, the Revierpark has been used various measures to lower its energy requirement years. For instance, arrangements for effective heat insulation and heat production by solar energy were made in the last couple of years.

The combined heat and power unit on vegetable oil basis reduces expenses for heat production.

The plant was planned and constructed by ELE. It is also ELE who operates the CHP now and sells the produced heat to Revierpark Nienhausen GmbH. The CHP covers more than half of the energy requirements of the entire facilty per year.

The CHP is located on the lido grounds, but easily accessible from the road. 27 t of rape oil are delivered two times a month by a big tank vehicle. The CHP adds to a natural gas plant of the Revierpark, providing for a very high supply guarantee.

The CHP works with a motor comparable to a truck-engine. The aggregate has a heat capacity of about 350 kilowatts, an electric emission of similar size and is heat led. This means, the aggregate only works, when heat is needed and only then it also produces electricity. The current meets the requirements of green electricity and is supplied to the ELE-grid, where is it sold as "ökoPlus". The engine produces the yearly energy requirement of an average household in only 8 hours. The heat emission of the CHP would suffice to provide heat for an entire new settlement. The contract between Revierpark Nienhausen and ELE runs for ten years, the ELE's investement was about 500 000€.
