BOGESTRA Hybrid Bus

Brand-new bus with innovative technology. Diesel engine combined with two electric motors

Solaris Urbino 18 Hybrid

You can see from a distance that BOGESTRA bus "0778" is something special. Its huge lettering says "Hybrid" and it has been in-use in Gelsenkirchen since the end of June 2008. The articulated vehicle type Solaris Urbino 18 Hybrid is 18 meters long. The diesel engine is combined with two electric motors. By using this all new bus with innovative technology, BOGESTRA contributes to conservation and climate protection.

The bus is sometimes used in Gelsenkirchen on the line 383 which connects Gelsenkirchen-Horst and Gelsenkirchen-Bulmke-Hüllen. It also stops at the central bus station. Currently it is used in Witten and before the bus was tested in Bochum for almost six months. Further tests in other cities are intended. The use of Solaris Urbino 18 Hybrid is a project of "Kooperation östliches Ruhrgebiet" (KÖR). This means the companies DSW21, HCR and Vestische are planning tests with this hybrid bus as well.

The hybrid drive merges a 340 hp diesel engine with two 75 kw electric motors. This means that the pros of both kinds of motors are effectively combined. The bus uses the electic motors when starting-up because at this point most of the energy is needed. Then, when it comes to an ideal rotational-speed range, the diesel engine starts. When driving and when slowing down, the bus generates the energy for the electric motors. The energy store is located on the roof.

The energy efficient hybrid drive means a 90 percent reduction of particulate matter, a 30 percent CO2 reduction and a 39 percent nitrogen oxides reduction. Another pro of Solaris Urbino 18 Hybrid is its proved and tested technology, because this kind of hybrid drive has been used in the USA for years.

BOGESTRA does not only set the standard for eco-friendly technology with the use of this hybrid. At the end of 2007 the company commissioned 17 all new articulated buses whose motors meet the EEV standard. This abbreviation stands for "Enhanced Environmentally Friendy Vehicle" and was originally developed for natural gas-dedicated vehicles. Currently it is the highest European emission standard for buses and trucks that run with diesel.
These eco-friendly vehicles exeed Eurocode 5.
