SolarCup brought in 20,000 euro
Before the 2006 World Cup Gelsenkirchen was looking for the winners of the SolarCup goal wall shooting. And the winners were the whole city, the conservation and climate protection. More than 6,000 people at 84 events donated money for solar projects in their hometown and in South Africa, the venue of the next World Cup. In Gelsenkirchen a "One-World-Solar Plant" was built. With these profits solar und education projects in South Africa are to be financed over the next 20 years. All in all 20,000 euro were donated for this "energy bridge". "The winners of Solar Cup 2006 are all the citizens of Gelsenkirchen who got involved in climate protection and international understanding, within the last three months." said mayor and SolarCup patron Frank Baranowski at the finale in the Science Park on June 8, 2006. Such a commitment was rewarded of course. The best goal wall shooter in each category got free box tickets for a home match of FC Schalke 04. The runners-up won a whole day with the FC Schalke 04 at a home match. But those who did not score a hit could hit the jackpot at the lottery and win a top prize, too. The event was brought to success with the help of numerous supporters. The SolarCup was made possible with the commitment of companies, lots of voluntary helpers and its patrons.
