Block Heating Station in Bulmke-Hüllen

Protestant Church Bulmke-Hüllen inaugurates Rape Oil-Block Heating Station

Gelsenkirchen. Two churches in Bulmke and Hüllen have grown together. Effectively as a secondary effect, the churches were able to implement trend-setting architecture with state-of-the-art energy supply. Due to the fusion, the modernization of the parish hall became essential. Together with the adjoining apartment house, it has now a block heating station running with rape oil. So the parish hall is not only a meeting place but also a figurehead for energy efficiency. On the occasion of the "Week of European Biomass Days" the new block heating station was inaugurated by the architect and church representatives.

Energy Agency NRW on board.

Henning Disselhoff, priest of the protestant church in Bulmke, gave reasons for the commitment: "The church can make a small but important contribution to Solar City Gelsenkirchen. We show trend-setting technologies that are worthwhile even today." The congregation was supported by North-Rhine Westphalia that paid 20,000 euro and by the Energy Agency NRW that provided technical know-how.

Alternative for Gas and Oil

The parish hall is not exclusively used as a meeting place. Since the modernization, up to 80 portions of lunch are made for teenagers and senior citizens every day. The block heating station had to be up to the enlarged demand for space.

Until the modernization, the building was gas-heated. However, this gas heating was repair-prone. "Think big" - In the context of energy efficiency it was smart to include the adjoining apartment house. The advantage of the installed block heating station is that it produces both heat and electricity. "From a floorspace of 2000 m², the supply becomes attractive with the help of a combined heat and power cycle." said architect in charge Wanda Kleihues van Tol. "Unlike in familiy homes, such dimensions are very common in apartment homes and parish halls. It is absolutely worth thinking about alternative energy supply."

Additionally, you can damatically reduce CO2 emissions with renewable energy. Rape oil is CO2-neutral when it is burned. By now it is also cheaper than conventional heating oil, due to increasing gas- and oil prices. In the normal mode the amount of produced electricity exeeds the demands of the parish hall and the apartment house. The block heating station produces 300 percent of the needed electricity. The overplus is fed into the public grid and because of a feed-in tariff of 19,5 cent/Kwh, the investment gives a good return.
