Zukunftsinitiative Gelsenkirchen 2020 was founded in April 2009 to follow the city's path to future energies. Traditionally Gelsenkirchen has high competence in the energy sector. By now the city has made a name for itself as solar city. In 2020 at the latest the city of Gelsenkirchen is to be intrinsically tied to the whole value-added chain from eco-friendly energy production to highly efficient energy application. So Gelsenkirchen is becoming more attractive for businesses but also for skilled workers and for students.

Besides the city of Gelsenkirchen numerous Gelsenkirchen-based businesses, Fachhochschule Gelsenkirchen (university of applied sciences) and IHK are involved in this project. Both mayor Frank Baranowski and Peter Schneppers, CEO of IHK Nord Westfalen, have succeeded in raising funds to instruct Science Park Gelsenkirchen to implement the strategic objectives. All in all 12 companies located in Gelsenkirchen are engaged in "Pilotprojekt Energie" which is limited till 2011. These businesses are listed below.

A steering comittee supervised by Rainer von Courbiere, former CEO of ELE - Emscher Lippe Energie, was established to accompany "Pilotprojekt Energie". The work schedule is to create better networks between companies of the energy sector and to coordinate the public relations of Gelsenkirchen and the involved companies. Joint activities are planned to support the company's HR marketing.

The project's main objective is to push the already established reputation of Solar City Gelsenkirchen and to combine and present all energy-related activities. For these purposes its website is being upgraded and made bilingual. New activities, dates and projects revolving around energy efficiency, renewable energies and climate protection are to be covered continously. The website's company guide presents Gelsenkirchen based companies from the energy sector.
